EMA Singapore co-creates a green micro-grid to deliver resilient and sustainable energy for Pulau Ubin

Customer Profile
About the customer
Pulau Ubin is a rustic island off Singapore's northeast coast, offering a glimpse into the country's past with its traditional kampongs (villages), lush jungles, and granite quarries, now repurposed into scenic lakes. Known as "Granite Island," it's a popular eco-tourism spot for cycling, hiking, kayaking, and birdwatching, preserving a slower pace of life with minimal modern development.

Project Overview
Vector Green was proud to contribute our solar and energy management expertise to the Pulau Ubin Microgrid project, a landmark initiative led by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) in collaboration with a consortium of industry partners. The project was designed to demonstrate how renewable energy and advanced energy storage can work together to power an entire island more sustainably and reliably.
At Pulau Ubin, solar photovoltaic systems were deployed alongside large-scale flow battery storage to strengthen grid resilience and reduce dependence on conventional power sources. In a unique approach to improving system performance, vegetation was installed around the solar panels to form a “solar green roof.” This innovation reduced the ambient temperature of the PV systems by between 3°C and 8°C, improving overall efficiency by 1.5 to 4 per cent. With the recent expansion of solar capacity and energy storage, the microgrid now draws approximately 95 per cent of its power from solar energy, significantly reducing its reliance on diesel generation.
Vector Green played a key role throughout the project lifecycle. Our scope included the procurement of equipment, site coordination, and logistics management to Pulau Ubin, as well as managing submissions for authority approvals. We also delivered the design and construction of new civil and structural steel works for the solar farm, installed the green roof and vegetation system, and carried out the mechanical and electrical installation of both the solar PV and energy storage systems. The project was completed with thorough testing and commissioning to ensure reliable, long-term operation.
Through this project, Vector Green supported the successful deployment of one of Singapore’s most prominent microgrid initiatives, showcasing how integrated renewable energy solutions can deliver resilience, efficiency, and sustainability at scale.
